With over twenty years of postgraduate experience in the field of physiotherapy, Lorraine has developed an expert set of diagnostic and manual ‘hands-on’ skills for treating acute and chronic pain. Her strength as a physiotherapist lies in her ability to effect change in a patient’s quality of life from the first visit, with the reassurance of an accurate diagnosis and a solid plan for recovery from the outset. It is her understanding of the pathophysiology of the pain system (how the body may react and respond to pain) that underpins her unique treatment style. Her enthusiasm to show patients how they can best help themselves has strongly contributed to her reputation as a patient focused physiotherapist.
Lorraine has worked part-time as a sports physiotherapy contractor with the Irish Womens Senior squad at the IRFU High Performance Centre, and has worked at the London Olympic Games and with the International Medical Department of the FAI, travelling to European competition at U17 and U19 level as well as the Algarve Cup with the Senior Women’s International squad. Renowned for her discrete and personal approach to patient care, Lorraine’s established professional relationships with medical colleagues, GPs and Consultants across Dublin are key components of her successful patient outcomes.
Lorraine works alongside Mr Derek Cawley, Consultant Spinal Orthopaedic Surgeon on a Friday sessional basis to provide combined consultations for neck and back pain patients at the Mater Private hospital.
Her main clinical site is at Physiofusion where she established the clinic sixteen years ago. An effective treatment session begins with an ability to ask the right questions and listen to the patient’s story, and this is where Emma excels as a clinician. She takes time in her treatment room to ensure each patient learns the cause of their pain and how they can help to facilitate healing - from postural advice, footwear suggestions, pilates mini-workouts to fit into the working day, and desk based stretches for neck and back pain in busy office life, she strives to empower her patients through education , hands-on relief and treatment strategies that support not only recovery - but improve overall wellness.
She began her career in the NHS as rotational Physiotherapist, gaining valuable experience in a hospital setting as part of a multidisciplinary team and this early hospital training helps us to understand a patients journey as we help to prepare them for surgery or guide rehabilitation following a hospital stay. Emma worked through various rotations including elective surgery for knee and hip replacement surgeries, fracture rehabilitation, osteoporosis related pain, rotator cuff tears and shoulder dislocations.
