Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a subcutaneous form of massage therapy which is specific to treating and supporting the lymphatic system.

Emma Beaver (BSc Physio) is a CORU State Registered and Chartered Physiotherapist, who is also a fully certified Level 3 practitioner in the Dr Vodder Method of MLD which is recognised as a medical grade of lymphatic drainage and the certification of choice for healthcare professionals. The technique involves a carefully applied sequence of hand movements that follow the natural pathways of lymphatic drainage, promoting the flow of lymph fluid from an area of injury or retention, and aiding in the removal of waste and toxins from the body. Detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the lymphatic system is a crucial part of the efficacy of MLD treatment.

Emma's physiotherapy degree and experience, combined with her extensive postgraduate training in MLD, establishes her as an expert in this field in Dublin.

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system doesn’t function properly, leading to swelling and fluid build-up. It may also cause discomfort, a feeling of heaviness, and restricted movement.

Primary lymphoedema describes a lymphatic system that has been impaired from birth or can be triggered by hormonal or stressful life events.

Secondary lymphoedema is a condition which describes impairment of lymphatic drainage due to damage or obstruction of the lymphatic system. This can occur after surgical procedures, radiation therapy, trauma, or infection that disrupts normal lymphatic function. The resulting ‘lymphatic insufficiency’ leads to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in tissue spaces under the skin and surrounding organs causing localised swelling. Secondary lymphoedema commonly affects the arms and legs, but can also involve other regions including the head and neck, and presents with symptoms such as progressive swelling, fibrosis, and decreased joint and limb mobility. The condition may be worsened by factors such as infection, venous insufficiency, or obesity.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is an important clinical modality to treat lymphoedema. It is a specific massage-based technique consisting of which helps to reduce swelling and pain, facilitate improved functioning of an impaired lymphatic system, support good circulation and strengthen the immune system.

MLD for Cancer patients:

Lymphoedema may occur as a side-effect of cancer treatment when lymph nodes are surgically removed or damaged by radiation therapy, or when the cancer itself blocks the lymphatic system.

This light, rhythmic drainage technique is a component of a physiotherapist’s comprehensive treatment plan to ease symptoms, working in conjunction with skin care, compression garments, and exercises to redirect fluid and reduce swelling. MLD must be performed by a qualified and certified practitioner to effectively stimulate the lymphatic system and promote fluid movement toward functioning lymph nodes, helping the body manage infections and reducing pain and swelling.

Emma will guide you through this process with an explanation of the process and show you how you can help to manage your symptoms at home.
